Therm'eau! No more mercury! This decorative object tells you the temperature thanks to a cleverly organized mixture of water and air!
The principle is simple. The hotter it is, the more the water vibrates and expands. Water is incompressible, but air can be. The only solution for the water is to take the air's place in the float. This makes it heavier and moves down a notch.
The principle is ingenious: a small pipette in the float connects the water in the tube to that in the float, allowing the transfusion to take place.
Conversely, the colder it is, the more the water relaxes and allows air to return to its place. This lightens the float. It can therefore rise.
The system is balanced by the small chain attached to the float. It can therefore remain balanced. Otherwise, it would either sink or remain at the top. It's all a question of balance.
